When Should You See a Child Specialist? A Parent's Guide

As a parent, it isn't always obvious when a concern needs a doctor and when it will pass on its own. Here's a simple guide.

Routine visits worth keeping

  • Vaccinations on the recommended schedule, with catch-up doses if any were missed
  • Well-child checks to track growth, nutrition and development
  • Newborn care in the early weeks

When to book sooner

  • A fever that is very high, lasts more than two to three days, or comes with poor feeding, breathing difficulty, a rash, drowsiness or dehydration
  • Any fever in a newborn — seek care promptly
  • Diarrhoea or vomiting with signs of dehydration
  • Concerns about growth, height, weight or puberty
  • Excessive thirst, frequent urination or unexplained weight loss

Trust your instinct

You know your child best. If something feels off, a short consultation brings reassurance — or catches a treatable issue early, which is always better.

This article is for general awareness and does not replace a consultation.
